We created an interactive poster ("Prezi") which allows anyone to explore the aspects of biodiversity that they find most compelling. Biodiversity is valuable in many different ways and with this interactive map we make it easy to see both multiple aspects of biodiversity's value as well as dive deep into which organizations that are most impactful for one particular value.

Alex Nunns composed and presented a ten minute summary talk on the many ways biodiversity is important to us and our society. It covered lesser know benefits to humankind, longterm concerns, and the ways in which biodiversity is easy to overlook despite being incredibly fundamental to most aspects of our well-being. It also touched on how biodiversity is in worse condition than it might appear from raw species counts, plus some areas to look for effective solutions. It was given during the "Thinking Outside the EA Cause Area Box" session at EAGxCambridge. The presentation was recorded and will be shared here when it is available. There are tons of points and information which unfortunately didn't make it into the short timeframe, which we hope will form the basis for further presentations on EA in Biodiversity and EcoResilience!
Here are the presentation slides if you want to revisit it. We mapped out a few different eco-centric worldviews to better understand how they orient to key themes, motivators, and how they may define or understand problems.
Leon created a membership form for the group. As we begin to grow, we have need of a way to track where and what our members are involved in. This membership form is where we make our introductions and make ourselves available as resources for each other. Many of us have expertise in unrelated areas. The only thing that's 'required' to join is an interest in doing more to make nature better for future generations. Everyone is invited to add themselves.
Naryan has been creating diagrams of our discussion every time we hold a meeting. It has become a rich landscape of our thinking and progress in developing our group cohesion and strategy. At a glance you can see our work, and you can also deep dive into which parts are most intriguing. Please, explore this mental model of what we've been thinking and doing since we began meeting in September.
Tandena has been reading and recording notes on the latest thought and development in conservation. Here are some of the things she has put together: Reviews and summaries of nine books:
Recently she summarized a scientific paper on Indigenous Conservation successes, obstacles, and needs.
Tandena continues to maintain the database of Biodiversity and Restoration organizations. Iska wrote an EA analysis of the total contributions from nature to India from pollination initiatives. Read the original here, where he considers Importance, Neglectedness and Tractability.

On August 10th 2022 Eileen Iska and Tandena wrote a post on the EA forum about Resilience and Biodiversity. It summarized our understanding of the concerns and importance of biodiversity with an effective altruist lens. This is how the project began. Earlier we asked for impressions and feedback about biodiversity from the EA forum community here. |
